1885 - Theodor Mommsen
At the same time as Julius Menadier, the renowned ancient historian Theodor Mommsen from Berlin took notice of the coin collection in Barenau. A year later, he published his reflections on the »location of the Varus Battle« (»Zur Örtlichkeit der Varusschlacht«). He wrote:
»In my opinion, the coins found in and around Barenau belong to the legacy of the army of Varus which perished in 9 AD in the Venner Moors.«
Mommsen's thesis was met with a lot of critism. His contemporaries were of the opinion that the finding-place lacked any weaponry, or Roman bronze coins which the soldiers carried along as pay and must have lost on their way.
