Thusnelda

Thusnelda was the daughter of the Cheruscan »princeps« Segestes. She had a brother called Segimuntos.

Her father was opposed to her marriage with Arminius whose plans he rejected. Thusnelda had already been promised to another man. Without hesitation Arminius consequently seized her, with her consent. Segestes did not accept this, and recaptured his now pregnant daughter. When he believed that he could not defend himself anymore against the very fierce attacks from Arminius' forces, he called for help to the Romans.

Not only did they liberate him, but they also took his daughter, the wife of the rebel Arminius, to Rome. She and her son Thumelicus, who was born in captivity, were paraded through the streets of Rome in Germanicus’ victory march, together with other vanquished Cherusci. Their father, Segestes, participated as an official guest, loyal to the Roman Empire. It is not known what happened to her after that, but in any case, she obviously never returned to Germania.
