Thumelicus
The son of Arminius and Thusnelda was presumably born in 15 AD while being in Roman captivity. Two years later, he and his mother took part in Germanicus’ victory march through Rome as a member of the defeated Germanic tribe. His grandfather however was an official guest and watched them go past.
Thumelicus grew up as a political hostage of the Roman Empire in Italy, and was probably raised in Ravenna. The Roman writer Tacitus mentions that he had a sad destiny. We do not have a more detailed description of his life. The only known fact is that Thumelicus must have died before 47 AD. In this year, the Cherusci asked Rome if the only surviving descendant of the princely family, Italicus, could become their king.
