The Marsi

At the time of the Varus Battle, the Marsi had settled between the rivers Ruhr and Lippe. They were allies of the Cherusci and fought against Varus’ Roman legions.

In 14 AD, the Marsi celebrated a cultural ceremony with their allies, the Bructeri, when they were attacked and defeated by a Roman punitive expedition under the leadership of Germanicus. One year later Germanicus successfully attacked the Germanic Marsi again and was able to regain one of the  aquilas which had been seized during the Varus Battle. Furthermore, Cassius Dio mentions the Marsi in relation to the retrieval of the second aquila in 41 AD, which had also been seized by Germanic forces
