No one would have expected this: The archaeological discovery in Kalkriese immediately drew enormous public attention. Every weekend, thousands of people visited Kalkriese in order to observe the progress. The initial exhibition of 1993 rapidly turned into a crowd puller. Already in 1996, the information centre was set up with the permanent exhibition called »Varus Battle - A Legend Is Being Excavated«. Meanwhile, the public interest has steadily increased.

It was unimaginable in 1990 and even in 1997 it still seemed to be utopian. But finally it came true: In 1999, the construction work of the »Museum and Park Kalkriese« began. The park was completed one year later and the museum opened on the 21 April 2002. Without the committed sponsors – the Stiftung der Sparkassen im Landkreis Osnabück, the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung, and also the Landkreis Osnabück - this development would not have been possible. With political foresight and great commitment, they took over the responsibility for this project.

In 1996, the Stiftung der Sparkassen im Landkreis Osnabrück was established. It took over the responsibility for the construction and the future of the new museum. This step was acknowledged and appreciated throughout Germany.   

The Landkreis Osnabrück pushed forward the project with political courage and a strong will. It provided funds for the new building, for the research and for the running costs.   

Currently, the sponsors concentrate on the construction of a new visitor centre, the revision and updating of the permanent exhibition and the special exhibition within the framework of the co-operation »EMPIRE CONFLICT MYTH« to commemorate the 2000th anniversary of the Varus Battle.
