The »Varusschlacht im Osnabrücker Land GmbH - Museum und Park Kalkriese« has been awarded the title »European cultural heritage« by the European Union. It is both a scientific institution and a museum in an area where, according to scientific evidence, extensive fighting took place between Roman and Germanic troops around the turn of the eras. It is the location of the events in 9 AD which Roman historians have called the »Varus Battle«. Nowadays, Kalkriese is Europe’s first ancient battlefield which is being analysed archaeologically.
We want to push forward research and increase scientific knowledge. We want to analyse the ancient battlefield in a systematic and multidisciplinary manner. We accept the special responsibility of protecting this cultural heritage.
We want to publish the results of the research, the history of the Varus Battle and the progress of its perception throughout history. We would like to make the knowledge accessible to the general public and present it in an illustrative manner.
We want to make this cultural heritage accessible to all people. For this purpose, we will be organising many diverse events and presentations.
We want to inspire the people, especially the young generation with regard to history, archaeology and natural sciences. We want to demonstrate how historic events influence geographical, political or cultural developments - in a precise, appropriate and at the same time interesting and clear manner.
By providing a high quality programme and competent service, we wish you a pleasant and satisfying stay, which you will gladly recollect.
Objectivity and accuracy, the responsible use of public funds, the protection of natural resources, the co-operation within the team as well as with other institutions and the quality of our actions and service are important standards within our daily work and when planning future actions.
