The Visitor Centre

»With Museum und Park Kalkriese, site of the Varus Battle, we own one of the most important historical landmarks in Lower Saxony,« stated Walter Hirche Lower Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Labor and Transport on the occasion of the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new visitor center at Museum und Park Kalkriese. In spring 2009, the doors of the new building will open to welcome visitors to the Varus Battle site.

From May 15, 2009 onward, the special exhibition KONFLIKT in the context of the archaeological exhibition project »IMPERIUM KONFLIKT MYTHOS. 2000 Jahre Varusschlacht« (EMPIRE CONFLICT MYTH. 2,000 Years Varus Battle) will introduce visitors to 1st to 5th century AD and its world of Germanic tribes. Later the building will host a variety of special exhibitions and events, thus always offering – independently of weather conditions – new attractions to the visitors. It is also going to be the new entrance area to Museum und Park Kalkriese, including the museum shop, service facilities and children’s museum. The building is financed by »Stiftung der Sparkassen im Osnabrücker Land« and the land of Lower Saxony and thus by the European Regional Development Fund.
