After 1690 -  Count Heinrich Sigismund von Bar

Count Heinrich Sigismund von Bar (1655 - 1721) studied in Gotha, Jena and Erfurt. He had a keen interest in history, especially in Roman coins.

Since 1690, he administered the estates in Barenau (Lower Saxony, Germany). There, farmers repeatedly found Roman coins which they handed over for a reward. Consequently, a collection of coins was accumulated which Count Heinrich Sigismund documented. This documentation was often praised during his lifetime.

During the Second World War the collection of coins together with its documentation were lost. Not until 1988, were two of the missing gold coins rediscovered in the Kestner-Museum in Hanover (Lower Saxony, Germany). Their path could be retraced from Basel (Switzerland) to Great Britain. All other coins from Count von Bar’s collection are still missing today.
