1887 - Friedrich Tewes

Friedrich Tewes reports on a official trip to the District of Osnabrück:

»Hanover, 27 December 1887

The coin collection in Barenau
The terrain between Barenau und Engter features no defensive enclosure or other clues, and as is well known, Mommsen tried to base his hypothesis on the Roman coins supposedly found in the surrounding area of Barenau which are today in the possession of the Erblanddrosten of Bar. The latter gladly permitted the inspection of the collection whose Republican and Augustan dinars were one by one brought to light by sod cutting. The oxidation of the coins however, which, as I could observe up to now, had only been apparent in such a way at larger finds and never at single finds which contradicts it. As a result, the evidence has significantly weakened. All hypotheses concerning the theatres of war of 9, 15 and 16 AD are still rather weak. Even so, the assumption that the battles of 15 AD took place in the area between Barenau and Engter respectively in the Dieven moors is justifiable. This is due to the fact that the local terrain is compatible with the one described by Tacitus and others and also the direction of the track way can be related to it.«
