1789 - Johann Eberhard Stüve
In his history of the city of Osnabrück, Johann Eberhard Stüve depicts in1789 the latest coin finds from Count of Bar's coin collection, a Gaius Lucius minting from 2BC - 1AD. He interprets this find as an evidence for the Varus Battle. He wrote:
»Many are of the opinion that this encounter took place in the region of Detmold. The river named Dute which runs through the Archdiocese, the very mountainous region, the many Roman coins showing the name of Emperor Augustus still being found, and other circumstances make it appear very likely that the place of the defeat must be looked for in the Archdiocese, namely where it adjoins the District of Tecklenburg.«
