»Kalkriese. The children of the day labourer Schomacker have found a golden coin in a field. The analysis has shown that it is a highly interesting golden coin. A similar one had been found 40 years ago in our community.
The coin is slightly larger than a 10-Mark coin, but its weight is that of a 20-Mark coin. The publisher of the “Numismatische Correspondenz” in Berlin has examined the coin and said the following about it: The coin is from the time of the Roman Empire, the time of Gaius and Lucius, Augustus’ adopted sons. Aureus (minted in 752 or 753 after the foundation of Rome). In the year 1 BC respectively in 1 AD. The obverse of the coin shows the two Caesars as boys, at the time that they were designated as consuls whilst they were putting on their toga virilis and receiving the silver shield and lance holders from the equestrian class. The inscription is: C Z CAESARES AVGVSTI Co S DESIG PRINC IVVENT. The reverse shows Emperor Augustus’ head and the following inscription: CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI PATER PATRIAE. – You may have a close look at the coin which is displayed in the shop window of the goldsmith Th. Paesler in Bramsche.«
