.Historic news about the ancient site at Kalkriese
1780 - Justus Möser
Justus Möser has extensively occupied himself with the coin finds in Kalkriese. He interpreted them as remains of Germanicus' expedition. In his »Osnabrückische Geschichte« (History of Osnabrück) 1780 he writes in the first chapter, third paragraph on page 159:
»The victory that Germanicus accomplished in his retreat close to the embankment which divided the Angrivarii and the Cherusci, was supposed to have taken place at the dam close to Vördern. In these areas, different coins were found of which many are in possession of Count von Bar zu Barenau«.
However, Justus Möser localised the site of the Varus Battle to today’s Osnabrück-Voxtrup. He thought that the megalithic tomb of the New Stone Age found there were two large undamaged pagan altars (German: »zwey grossen unversehrte heidnischen Altäre«) on which - referring to Tacitus - the Germanic forces slayed their Roman prisoners.
