»Victoria«! Rowing Like the Romans

Abschlussfahrt VictoriaIn the summer of 2009, four tons of Roman seafaring history anchored on the Mittellandkanal near Museum und Park Kalkriese. With the »Victoria«, a true to the original replica of a Roman warship and a tangible piece of history had arrived at Kalkriese. About 3,000 guests rowed the ship on 193 trips under the expert guidance of a coxswain’s team and supported by sports club TuS Bramsche members as well as pupils of Greselius-Gymnasium, a local high school.

Victoria in BerlinThe Roman ship was built in the context of the exhibition cooperation »IMPERIUM CONFLICT MYTH. 2,000 Years Varus Battle«. As seafaring ambassador for the exhibition project, the »Victoria« traveled waterways the Romans used already at the time of Emperor Augustus. The »Victoria« will continue to be around.
