2,000 Years Varus Battle – a Retrospective

 

Searching for Evidence at Kalkriese

 

Jugendcamp 2A very special opportunity to learn more about history was offered to young people from all over the world during the excavation season 2009. Instructed by experienced archaeologists, they were allowed to work on one of two excavation sections, where they discovered and classified numerous finds. The European excavation camp’s motto was »From battlefield to knowledge field«. It did not only offer insights into archaeologists’ work, but also significantly helped to foster global understanding. After the European excavation camp was over, regular excavations at Kalkriese continued. 

 

Grabung 2009-08-kl aArchaeologists and many volunteers unearthed a multitude of finds in park area of Museum und Park Kalkriese. Among other items, the antique battlefield yielded Roman coins and fragments of a horse harness as well as pottery shards belonging to a Germanic settlement which had been abandoned a century before the Varus Battle. Visitors of Museum und Park Kalkriese showed great interest in the excavations. During the daily info hour at noon they gathered around the excavation sections to obtain first-hand information about the ongoing work.
