»With Museum und Park Kalkriese, site of the Varus Battle, we own one of the most important historical landmarks in Lower Saxony,« stated Walter Hirche, Lower Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Labor and Transport, on the occasion of the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new visitor center at Museum und Park Kalkriese.
The visitor center opened on May 15, 2009 with the special exhibition KONFLIKT in the context of the archaeological exhibition project »IMPERIUM KONFLIKT MYTHOS. 2000 Jahre Varusschlacht« (EMPIRE CONFLICT MYTH. 2,000 Years Varus Battle). Since its opening, the building has repeatedly hosted a variety of special exhibitions and events, thus always offering – independently of weather conditions – new attractions to the visitors.
The building was financed by »Stiftung der Sparkassen im Osnabrücker Land« and the land of Lower Saxony and thus by the European Regional Development Fund.
